Large Am Cat - free amigurumi pattern

This classic ami cat is easy-to-create and perfect to start with if you’re a beginner. The size of finished toy is about 33-36 cm.

To crochet large Ami Cat you’ll need:

  • Alize cotton gold batik (55% cotton, 45% acryl, 100 g / 330 m) of desired main cat color
  • Alize cotton gold (55% cotton, 45% acryl, 100 g / 330 m) of white color
  • 1.7 mm crochet hook
  • Hollow fibre for stuffing
  • Sewing needle and scissors

Skill level: beginner

Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
st = stitch
inc = increase (two sc in one stitch)
dec = decrease (two stitches together)
[..] = total number of stitches

Helpful tip: To avoid getting a hexagon shape when crocheting head and body please make one sc in the beginning of each round and don’t count it as 1 stitch. Thus you’ll make a little shift. Note that this concerns only the rounds where you increase and decrease stitches.

Can you explain more about you tip of avoiding hexagon shape by adding one Sc. You say don’t count as one stitch but my you end up with an extra stitch?

Hi Gail, as you you make shift with 1 sc, the round ends up with one extra stitch. So you have to move yarn marker 1 st forward every round where you make shift.

Can you explain where you put the extra stitch? I’m a visual learner and still getting used to reading patterns. I think I know what you mean, but am having difficulty visualising it. Even better would be if you have a link to a video on you tube.

The extra stitch is between the last one and the first one.

hi, I am working on the cat now and just want to confirm the extra stitch. I have been adding it to my first stitch of the round (if it calls for 1 sc i have done 2). Is that what I am supposed to do, or do you do the extra sc in its own stitch?

          • Amigurumi Today
            February 13, 2019 at 5:07 am

Hi Sarah, you can crochet without 1 extra stitch, the design won’t change. If you want to make it, please shift your stitch marker 1 stitch forward.

    Hello
I’m a beginner at crochet and would like to attempt this I have two questions
    1. Is there a yarn brand substitute as this particular brand is not available to me?
    2. The smallest crochet hook I could find was a D 3.25mm?
I attempted to start this but the stitches look much bigger in the pictures posted then mine do ? Help pls

Hi Sara, here is a similar yarn but of other weight http://www.iceyarns.com/camilla-cotton-magic-turquoise-lilac-green-blue-shades
I think 3.25 mm crochet hook is suitable if you use Camilla Cotton Magic yarn. Note that your ami cat will be bigger in this case 🙂

    Hi,
I am having some major trouble with this pattern.
I ordered the recommended yarn. It is a good quality and the color is true. The problem is, it is very fine. It certainly won’t work up to the scale that is stated. If I use the size hook recommended in the supplies section (1.7 mm) is very small for use with yarn. The size hook shown on the wrapper (3.3 mm) is more to my liking but I think it is too large for use with this yarn. I’d appreciate any advise you could offer.
    Thank you.

Hi Kathy, please note that to crochet amigurumi you should use a hook that is much smaller than it’s specified on yarn label. If it’s hard for you to work with 1.7 mm hook, please try 2.0-2.5 mm hook, it should be suitable.

Hi, I’m very new at this and thought I would try this as it says it’s for beginners. What’s confusing me is that you say to add a stitch and not count it when increasing and decreasing. I started doing that but I’m ending up with extra stitches. So does it work like this: after the first round of 6 stitches one would work a sc into the first stitch and then start counting 12 stitches after that so it will actually be 13 stitches and then again work a sc into the first stitch of the next round and start counting from there and so on.

    Thank you so much.

I was wondering, after I finish crocheting the body and continue crocheting into the head from the bottom working to the top, that way I won’t have to sew them together, it would be one whole together, could this be possible? Thanks

Hi Lessie 🙂 You can use online versions of the patterns for free on our website and mobile app. PDF version itself is not free. Because it takes a lot of time to prepare the patterns. So, in spite of this fact all people who can’t pay for PDF patterns can view them on the website and make wonderful toys. We don’t hide the instructions. Hope for your understanding 🙂

Of course with credits to you as the original designer and referring to this website. I’m a modarator in a large corcheters-group on Facebook and a lot of people say that they can’t read English, therefor i want to help them with a translation, but only if i have permission to do so. Hi Bernice, the size of the toy parts also depends on stitch tightness. Perhaps, you crocheted toy parts with different density.

First ami and I’m almost ready to start putting together. I think this guy is adorable, but I don’t think the written pattern is written well for a true beginner i.e. the legs don’t tell you to start with the white. The tip about the extra stitch is confusing. I’m still not sure I totally understand. Every row that has an increase or decrease is supposed to end with one extra stitch count for that row but it should just be a sc and not part of the pattern stitches and the marker goes to the stitch after the extra to show the start of the new round? More direction on how long tails should be and how to attach all the parts would have been greatly appreciated. I still love the pattern but it did require additional searches.

I made this one for an adult cat lover, she takes Sydney out with her camping and on her many road trips. I made it in purple, then made her a purple pussy hat to match. Love your patterns, super easy to understand and super cute. I sure wish you had more dog patterns like this for all the dog lovers in my family!

Love the pattern I am on my 4th cat. I have used 8ply wool and number 4 hook. 2 were for babies and 1 was for cat rescue raffle. One I’m doing is for order but money will go to rescue.

Is the one skein enough for a whole cat?

One skein was just exactly enough for my cat. I had a second just in case, but I didn’t need it. Happy hooking!

Is there a video online somewhere to show me how to do the increases without causing the head to look like a hexagon. I am totally confused.

This is the 3rd one I’ve made from this pattern, it is SO easy to make, even for beginners and when its all put together, its a good size. The other two I’ve done now live with two very happy kids. Give it a go, you wont regret it. GREAT pattern, thank you.

This is the third one I’m making. The first one is my three-year-old most cherished toy, one was a gift, this one I’m making now is a replacement for our dear Meow and is going to be called Newmeow. There is no easier pattern anywhere, and the finished toy looks amazing. Many thanks for the pattern!

I am working on my first one. I have questions: Are just the “paws” stuffed on the arms and legs? What row do you attach the legs and tail? Arms? Thanks for any advice.

Just stuff the paws and not the whole arm or leg

There are no extra stitches. You are just rearranging the stitches to avoid making a hexagon.

Stagger your increases so that they don’t all line up.

Here’s a video from Happy Berry Crochet. She doesn’t really explain how to do the staggering until about the 12th minute.

pattern calls for 1.7mm crochet hook but the recommended yarns says it’s suitable for 2-4mm hook. What to do? crochet with smaller hook or use yarn manufacturers recommendation? Is it harder to crochet with a smaller hook? will the result be different if using a larger hook eg 2mm? I’d appreciate your advise asap.

I just started and don’t understand how inc (meaning 2 sc in each stitch) will change 12 stitches in row 2 to 18 stitches in row 3. Wouldn’t 2 sc in each of 12 stitches end up being 24 sc?

You are supposed to crochet 1 sc and then 1inc And then 1sc and 1 inc and the same again and again until the end of the row. So, you will finally have crocheted alternately 6 sc and 6 inc(=12), totalling 18 points.

No, porque debes tener en cuenta que se hacen puentos y aumento entonces se incrementaria en 6 o sea tenias 12 mas 6 son 18

Hook size recommended seems very small for this yarn. Did anyone who made this use a bigger hook?
