I guess we Amigurumi specialists (haha!) start all our projects with this. Wrap a loop of yarn around your two fingers – crossing it. Slip your hook under the first half of the “X” and over the second. You will have a loose yarn over your hook – and at this point – wrap your yarn around this uplifted piece to make a slip knot – and the circle will be hanging from it with a loose tail dangling outside the circle.
You put your hook through this small circle; yarn over; pull through to make a single stitch which is going to be over this circle of yarn. Put 6 stitches in the magic circle and pull the loose tail and the circle closes into a perfectly started round.
It’s okay to chain 3 – loop 3rd and 1st together and then go back through this little opening to make a circle of six too. This is modified – not really a magic circle but I’m sure it looks just as good – and is easier sometimes! Look on You Tube and watch a person who does something called “Yarn Scrap Fridays” and she teaches how to make a magic circle.

How do you add the heart? do i finish it off at the end of each row or keep it attached and just move the yarn up to the next line. and are we supposed to be using crochet thread-yarn? or regular yarn?

Hi Kasi, don’t cut off the yarn at each row when making the heart. The yarn used for the heart is of the same weight as the yarn used for the giraffe.

Hello & Thank You for sharing your patterns, they are so adorable!!!! You are truly gifted.
In regards to your cute HEARTY GIRAFFE pattern I was wondering if you remember how you made the scarf?
Also, could I have your opinion on doing it in worsted weight yarn.

Hi Kerry, to crochet the scarf you should make a chain of appropriate length, then crochet two rows of double crochet stitches. If you use worsted weight yarn, your giraffe will be bigger. So it’s up to you 🙂

Hello, strange…..yesterday I left a reply and now it’s gone? I try again! First of all thanks for the beautifull pattern, I love it. I also had a problem with round 52-56, I saw the explanation and I understand most of it only for 1 thing. I really don’t understand round 52: Crochet 8 sc, turn? Is this a chain? because in all the other rounds you say .. sc in the next .. st?? Also the number of 8 I don’t understand because in round 53-56 you go from 13 till 10. I hope you will answer me so I can go on with my giraffe, thanks!

Hi Monique, the 8 stitches in the Rnd 52 are single crochet stitches. They are needed to make the protruding part of the neck on the back side. I added some instructions and new pictures in the pattern. Please have a look.

I’ve been crocheting for 46 years and I also teach it, sometimes that can be quite a chore. And writing patterns is another whole story in itself. Not everyone understands at the same level. Hello! Thank you for this great pattern. I have a problem with the body. I am crocheting this backside for the head, but it’s not in the back like the pattern says. It is more between front and sode, so the heart won’t be in front of the tummy. The number of stitches is actually correct..what can I do?

Hi Antje, the heart isn’t located just in front of the tummy. It’s slightly aside. So if you want it to be in the middle of the tummy you have to change the position of upper part of the neck.

      1. Please have a look at this yarn weight chart https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yarn_weight
      2. The safest way is embroidering the eyes, because babies can pull out even special safety eyes.

I am more a visual learner than reading instructions.I see by the comments that quite a few of the questions could be shown how to be done easily if there was a video. I get a lot of my queries ironed out looking for videos.

    Hi there-

This pattern is so cute! I am really having trouble with how to do the heart and have it looking right. I read your instructions for invisible color switching for the rainbow pony as you mentioned, and I’ve tried it several times but it doesn’t look right at all. I am new to crochet and maybe that’s my problem…Please help!

Made three of these already (one blue, one pink and one stripes without heart). Absolutely love the pattern – easy to follow and they come out so cute. I’ve made it in sport and worsted weight. Both came out great. Thank you, thank you for sharing!!!

    Hi,
I cant thank you enough for your website and patterns……free ones as well as the ones I am happily to pay for as the price is very reasonable and the instructions are extremely detailed.
I have just finished the Hearty Giraffe. I used Lily Sugar’n Cream 100% cotton…….which I think is 10ply. It has turned out brilliantly a lot bigger than the one in your photo, a perfect loveable Giraffe gift for a little 2 year old girl (in my case) or boy.

Hello, I wanted to thank you for such a cute (and free) pattern! It was easy to understand and it was really fun to make for my friend’s daughter as her birthday is coming up. I also wanted to show you what I ended up with since I changed the color scheme and added a border around the heart: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/irisamiller/hearty-giraffe-by-amigurumi-today

The only “trouble” I had was with the placement of the head, as I think she’s looking too far up (I lined up the back of the head with the top of the neck), but since I am planning on making a giraffe for myself later, I can certainly make sure she’s looking more “towards the front” then up 🙂

    Thank you again! <3

Hi Kath 🙂 You can use online versions of the patterns for free on our website and mobile app. PDF version itself is not free. Because it takes a lot of time to prepare the patterns. So, in spite of this fact all people who can’t pay for PDF patterns can view them on the website and make wonderful toys. Hope for your understanding 🙂

If you use thicker yarn, your toy will be bigger as well. You don’t need to double the stitches, it’s not recommended.

Hello 🙂 This is such a beautiful pattern and I have enjoyed making it so much.
Some patterns I have used say I obviously can’t sell the pattern but I can sell the finished product if I give reference to the creators of the pattern.
For this hearty giraffe is this the case? Can I make small quantities to sell the finished product if I of course give credit to the creators? I’ve always wanted to start a small stall at our local market. Mainly baby blankets but I would love to have a few toys to go along with them.
I just don’t want to do the wrong thing thank you for your help 🙂
