This crochet hippo rattle is sure to become one of baby’s favorites! It provides a wonderful way to help develop baby’s motor skills.
One important note before you start following this crochet pattern – toys with small plastic parts should not be given to children under the age of 3! We strongly recommend embroidering eyes instead of using plastic eyes. Better safe than sorry!

This crochet pattern describes the rattle without a wooden ring. If you want to use a wooden ring, crochet the base rattle parts (ring and semi-ring) around it, beginning with the ring and finishing with the semi-ring.
Semi-ring:
Crochet 15 ch and join with sl st to make a circle. Start each round with 1 ch and finish with sl st. Continue crocheting around about 18 rounds. Crochet sc along the edges of the semi-ring with yellow yarn. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Ring:
Crochet 12 ch and join with sl st to make a circle. Continue crocheting around in spiral about 45-46 rounds. Now you have a cylinder. Insert it in the semi-ring, then join the ends of the cylinder with sewing needle to form a ring (don’t forget to stuff with fiberfill). Fasten off and weave in the end. Hide the seam shifting the semi-ring.
Arms (make 2):
Crochet with blue yarn.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: (inc) repeat 6 times [12]
Rnd 3: (sc in next st, inc) repeat 6 times [18]
Rnd 4-5: sc in all 18 st [18]
Rnd 6: (sc in next st, dec) repeat 6 times [12]
Rnd 7-9: sc in all 12 st [12]
Rnd 10: (sc in next st, dec) repeat 4 times [8]
Rnd 11-14: sc in all 8 st [8]
Stuff with fiberfill.
Rnd 15: (dec) repeat 4 times [4]
Close the hole. Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing.
I made this pattern, and it’s super easy and fun! JUST A PIECE OF ADVICE: when crocheting the head, place the plastic container in the head AFTER stuffing the nose. Or the nose won’t look plump and cute like it should. I placed the container in the nose before I did any kind of stuffing, so when I stuffed, the nose wasn’t round and plump.
Thank you Amigurumi Today for this pattern!! It will a great gift for my friends’ baby!
