Free amigurumi tutorial

These fancy horses are crocheted in uncommon way – as one part. You need to sew only ears. The height of finished crochet horse is approximately 14 cm. This toy required some skills, so if you’re just a beginner you’d better try another amigurumi toys at first 🙂

To create a crochet horse you’ll need:

  • Yarn (acrylic, cotton, semi-cotton or semi-woolen) – 250 m / 100 g
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook
  • Stuffing
  • Sewing needle, scissors
  • A pair of beads for eyes
  • Felting wool (optional)
  • Any decorations you want

Skill level: intermediate

Weave the tail in the needle and draw up the hole and weave in the end.
Stuff not very tightly (the horse shouldn’t be too plump in the end) through the opening in the neck. Use a chopstick while stuffing.

Start crocheting a neck, stuff it as you go.
The place where you join the yarn is indicated with an arrow on the photo.

Rnd 12: sc in the next 8 st, dec, sc in the next 10 st, inc, sc in the next st [22]
Rnd 13: sc in all 22 st [22]
Rnd 14: sc in the next 8 st, dec, sc in the next 8 st, inc, sc in the next 3 st [22]
Rnd 15: sc in all 22 st [22]
Rnd 16: sc in the next 3 st, hdc in the next 11 st, sc in the next 8 st [22]
Rnd 17: sc in the next st, hdc in the next 14 st, sc in the next 4 st – don’t finish the round till the end.

Start crocheting the body.
Take the yarn from the other end of the yarn skein and crochet 15 ch. This number can be different, this is the length of the horse’s body.
Sl st in the next st after crocheting Rnd 17 of the neck, cut the yarn, weave in the end, you can fix it with a needle.
The arrow indicates the place where the chain is joined.

Then crochet along the chain at both sides.
Rnd 1: sc in the next 14 ch, 3 sc in the last ch, sc in the next 35 st [52]
Rnd 2: sc in the next 15 st, inc, sc in the next 26 st, inc, sc in the next 9 st [54]
Rnd 3: sc in all 54 st [54]

Rnd 4: sc in the next 16 st, inc, sc in the next 26 st, inc, sc in the next 10 st [56]
Rnd 5: sc in all 56 st [56]
Rnd 6: sc in the next 17 st, inc, sc in the next 27 st, inc, sc in the next 10 st [58]
Rnd 7-8: sc in all 58 st [58]
Rnd 9: sc in the next 18 st, dec, sc in the next 26 st, dec, sc in the next 10 st [56]
Rnd 10: sc in all 56 st [56]
Rnd 11: sc in the next 17 st, dec, sc in the next 26 st, dec, sc in the next 9 st [54]
Rnd 12: about 51 sc – don’t crochet the round till the end. Start crocheting the right leg.

The leg is crocheted on 12 stitches. That’s why you should have 6 sc at one side and 6 sc at the opposite side. Count 12 sc back and continue crocheting in that last 12th st.

It’s difficult to separate rounds here, that’s why here is a description of the way of crocheting in spiral.

Don’t forget to stuff as you go. It’s difficult to stuff the first leg, because the opening in the body is still big. You can stuff till the end only through the body when the opening in the leg will be very small.

sc in the next 29 st, dec (outer side), sc in the next 21 st, dec (outer side), sc in the next 4 st, dec (inner side), sc in the next 3 st, dec (outer side), sc in the next 2 st, dec (inner side), sc in the next 2 st, sl st.
Leave the tail for sewing the opening. It’s better to sew when all the legs are ready.

The second leg – join yarn next to the first leg in front of your horse, sc in the next 6 st, join with the other side and crochet as the first leg.

Crochet the horse hind legs starting with the one that is at the edge. The place where you join the yarn is indicated with the arrow.
sc in the next 41 st, dec, sc in the next 4 st, dec, sc in the next 4 st, dec, sc in the next 3 st, dec, sc in the next 11 st, dec, sc in the next st, sl st

When joining the yarn for the last leg, leave a bigger tail. You will need it for sewing the opening at the belly.

All the legs are ready.

Stuff the body till the end and sew the opening at the belly.
Sew openings at the legs (3-4 stitches on each leg). Weave in all the ends.

Ears (make 2):
7 ch, 3 dc in the fourth ch from the hook. hdc in the next st, sc in the next st, 3 sc in the last ch, on the opposite side of the chain – sc in the next st, hdc in the next st, 3 dc in the next st, 3 ch and sl st in the last st.
Leave a tail for sewing. Fasten off and weave in the end from the starting chain.

Try on the ears – put one a little to the front and one a little back.

Next step are the mane and the tale. You can make them using a felting wool or making fringes with yarn (like scarf fringes, here is a tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpJTKwwHbIs). Sew eyes and decorate your crochet horse according to your taste.
